Managing Quantity Surveyor (0885)

We are recruiting for a Managing Quantity Surveyor to join us at Octavius, leading the commercial delivery of major rail infrastructure projects across Network Rail's North West & Central Framework.

Octavius is a leading civil engineering organisation delivering safe, sustainable and efficient transport solutions across the UK. As we continue to expand our presence in the North, this is an exciting opportunity to join a growing framework at a pivotal stage and play a leading role in shaping its commercial success.

We are appointed to Network Rail's North West & Central Capital Delivery Framework (CP7: 2024-2029), delivering multi-disciplinary rail projects across the West Coast Main Line corridor and beyond.

You'll be working on...

You'll lead the commercial delivery of a portfolio of major rail infrastructure projects across the North West, including station developments, power upgrades and rail enhancement works.

Key projects include:

• Cottam Parkway – a new station development valued at circa £25m+
• Farrington PSU – a major traction power upgrade supporting rail electrification
• Crewe to Weaver – a significant rail infrastructure scheme valued at circa £30m+

These projects form part of a long-term programme of investment and offer the opportunity to influence delivery from design through to construction.

In this role, you'll:

• Lead the commercial management of multiple projects, ensuring strong financial and contractual performance
• Take ownership of cost planning, forecasting, CVR reporting and commercial strategy
• Manage risk, change control and commercial opportunities
• Lead procurement and supply chain engagement
• Build strong relationships with project teams, clients and stakeholders
• Support and develop a growing commercial team, initially managing 1-2 direct reports

You'll work with...

A highly experienced team of commercial, project and delivery professionals working across Network Rail frameworks and major rail infrastructure projects.

You'll work closely with Commercial Managers, project teams, clients and supply chain partners, helping to drive commercial performance whilst supporting the growth of the framework.

Typically, you'll spend around three days between site and office locations, with the flexibility to work from home for the remainder of the week.

About you...

You're an experienced commercial professional who enjoys leading projects and developing people.

Whether you're already operating as a Managing Quantity Surveyor or you're a Senior Quantity Surveyor ready to take the next step, you'll be confident managing complex infrastructure projects and building strong relationships with clients, project teams and supply chain partners.

You'll bring...

• Significant experience within a Quantity Surveying or commercial management role
• Strong knowledge of cost management, forecasting and contractual administration
• Experience working with NEC contracts, ideally NEC4
• Experience leading projects within infrastructure, civil engineering or rail environments
• The ability to manage, mentor and develop commercial team members
• Strong stakeholder management and client-facing skills

Ideally, you'll also have:

• Rail infrastructure experience
• Rail power, E&P or electrification experience
• Professional membership (RICS, CICES or similar), or be working towards it
